Peter Berman appointed Director, School of Population and Public Health

A message from Dr. Dermot Kelleher, Dean, Faculty of Medicine

I am pleased to announce that Dr. Peter Berman has been appointed Director, School of Population and Public Health, effective January 1, 2019 to December 31, 2023.

Dr. Peter Berman

In his role, Dr. Berman will lead the School in its continued journey to transform health for populations in Canada and across the globe, as well as continue to advance its research and academic programs.

A health economist with 40 years of experience, Dr. Berman has provided exceptional educational leadership as Professor at the Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health (HSPH), and was the founding faculty Director of its new Doctor of Public Health degree. A pioneer in global health, he is currently leading several innovative projects to create primary care systems that will strengthen service delivery and improve health care financing mechanisms at a global level.

Dr. Berman has also worked extensively on health system reform and health care development in countries such as Egypt, Poland, Malaysia and Indonesia. From 2004 to 2011, he was the World Bank’s Lead Economist for Health, Nutrition and Population in India, as well as a leader of the bank-wide Health Systems Global Expert Team.

His appointment follows the leadership of Dr. Chris Lovato and Dr. Carolyn Gotay (interim Co-Directors from September 2016 to June 2018), Dr. Mieke Koehoorn (current interim Director) and Dr. Craig Mitton (who will provide interim leadership from September 1 to December 31).

I would like to thank them for their support and contributions to the School during their time as Interim Directors.

Please join me in welcoming Dr. Berman to his new role and to the Faculty of Medicine.
