SPPH Grand Rounds
Jerry Spiegel
Associate Professor, SPPH
Director, Global Health Research Program, Liu Institute for Global
Issues
TITLE: Developing Global Health Partnerships: Lessons from 6 years of collaboration in Ecuador
THEME: Global Health & Vulnerable Populations
UBC's Sustainably Managing Environmental Health Risks in Ecuador has been recognized by the Canadian Coalition of Global Health Research as a "gold standard' of partnerships. This interdisciplinary and intercultural project has stimulated establishment of innovative master's and PhD programs at Ecuadorian universities, creating a platform for collaboration with UBC students and faculty. And this has led to several funded action research initiatives, an Andean Public Heath Observatory on Environment and Health, and an Environmental Health Clinic. This session will examine strategies for meeting the challenges inherent in developing global health partnerships.

Maternal-Child Health Theme Town Hall Meeting
The Maternal Child Health (MCH) Theme in the School of Population and Public Health is now off to a great start - a number of ideas were put forward in the Town Hall Meeting in June and the MCH Advisory Committee Meeting in October.
We are now following up on the recommendations put forward by the Advisory Committee. Key informant surveys to assess the needs, competencies and employment opportunities for MCH graduates are now underway. We are also completing an environmental scan of courses offered at UBC in other departments relevant to MCH.
UBC Faculty and Trainees interested in maternal-child health are welcome to attend the MCH Theme's town hall meeting on Jan. 27 at the CFRI Chan Centre for Family Health Education.
