Dr. Michael Law, Assistant Professor at the SPPH’s Centre for Health Services and Policy Research has won the 2012 CIHR Institute of Health Services and Policy Research Article of the Year Award.

CIHR’s IHSPR is dedicated to supporting the advancement of health services and policy research in Canada. This award recognizes published research that has ‘significantly contributed to the advancement of the field of health services and policy research in Canada’. The award was presented May 30 at the Canadian Association of Health Services and Policy Research annual conference in Montreal.

Dr. Law received the award for his paper “The effect of cost on adherence to prescription medications in Canada”, which was published in the CMAJ (Canadian Medical Association Journal). The paper found that one in ten Canadians cannot afford to take their prescription drugs as directed. When first released, the paper garnered significant interest and national print and television media coverage.

Dr. Richard Mathias, Professor with the School of Population and Public Health has been awarded a 2012 Diamond Jubilee Medal.

These Medals, created to mark the 2012 celebrations of the 60^th anniversary of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s accession to the Throne, are given to worthy Canadians who have made significant contributions and achievements that bring credit to Canada

Dr. Mathias was awarded this medal for his significant contribution to the field of public health.

Congratulations to SPPH PhD Student, Stephen Pan, who has been named as a U.S. Student Fulbright Award to China.

Stephen, who is supervised by Dr. Patricia Spittal, will be travelling to Washington D.C. at the end of June to attend the Fulbright Orientation.

Colleagues:

Today we are extending a warm welcome to our colleagues from the Centre for Applied Ethics, the Human Early Learning Partnership, Population Data BC and Aboriginal Peoples’ Health. Last evening's UBC Senate motion finalized arrangements for the first three groups to move to the school as of June 1.  The Aboriginal People's Health joined us earlier this spring.

These moves complete a process of "confederation" that began when a number of UBC's public health oriented units joined to form the School in 2008, and continued with the migration of SOEH last spring. All of these units carry a strong and natural connection with our mission at the School of Population and Public Health, and we are very pleased that they are now part of our family.

There are many people from these units, and from within our School, who have worked hard to make this joining possible.  Rapid growth brings extraordinary opportunity and also its fair share of challenges.  We will be putting plenty of energy into making these moves a success.

Congratulations to SPPH PhD candidate, Daniel Werb, who has been awarded a 2012 Trudeau Foundation Scholarship, the most prestigious doctoral award of its kind in Canada. The scholarship supports 15 brilliant social sciences and humanities doctoral students who are focused on researching and sharing innovative ideas that will help solve issues of critical importance to Canadians.

Daniel's project will focus on effective ways to prevent injection drug use among vulnerable populations such as Vancouver's street youth.

SPPH Assistant Professor, Jason Sutherland, has been named as the Canadian Harkness Fellow in Health Care Policy and Practice.

These fellowships, sponsored by the Commonwealth Fund, provide an opportunity for mid-career health services researchers and practitioners from Australia, Canada, Germany, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom to spend up to 12 months in the United States, conducting original research and working with leading U.S. health policy experts.

Dr. Sutherland will be working with leading U.S. policy makers, governments and researchers investigating incentives for improving coordination of care between settings and reducing the amount of ineffective and inappropriate care.
